First a bit of context. The co-guru Andrea Good, was agitating her devotees in Japan for a long time as how the next step would be the creation of a Japanese Sangha. She was pushing for that process for a while, when she started taking the steps for registering such an organization in Japan. Pragya even went to Japan for that occasion and was handled like a servant by Madame the Co-guru. Andrea Good was trying to get money in any way shape or form she could. From Kim the up till now and maybe no longer President of BSDS she asked for money for the stay of Pragya, from her local devotees she was asking for money to pay for ‘her volunteer work’ as translator of one or two A4 pages of text, mostly done by actual Nepali (Rahul, Pragya etc…), but for which she needed the credit, and more than anything else the money. Om money padme hmmmm.
Throughout all those years I have been interacting (if we can call it like that) with Mrs Andrea G., each and everyone of her actions visible and the less visible ones through others, were control, money, lies, self-delusion, and ego trips. She is actually convinced to do the right thing for a higher goal and that as such she is above everyone else. That is usually what is called fanaticism. That is the moment where your faith or what you believe takes over your conscience, moral principles and honesty.
You will see through her own words below in the full copy of her text, how she uses people’s devotion and her position to ask for money. She uses what was meant to be ‘volunteer work’ her donation to the Sangha as she calls it everywhere, to monetize her effort. When confronted with that, she just simply brushes the issue away and says, it ‘was my friends helping me’. Not for a split second does she even envisage that this is an abuse of her position, a deviated way of having others pay for your ‘donation of time’. But as time has shown, for all these years all that she has been doing is clinging to her position, ‘her powers’, perceived and imposed, and to her denials.
While trying to open a Sangha in Japan, she realizes having a legal organization imposes some restrictions in the way you deal with money, with legality, a structure and rules that need to be followed, you have to be able to finance such a structure, you have to have a real backing and support. Kim was insisting that things are done properly. Andrea didn’t like that. So the adventure of opening a Sangha had to be called off, and some explanations needed to be given to all those people waiting for that. I would like to give you an update of the situation over here and also make a request. I’m sure all have been wondering exactly what became of our lives and the Japan Chapter after the return of Manu and Bhante. Our group was a little taken aback when it really came home that forming a Japanese chapter would mean submission of personal documentation both in Nepal and Japan and furthermore the complete formation of a “religious organization”, there being thousands in this country already with not a lot to boast about, but rather more to hide which means that such an organization would likely alienate more than it would welcome. It would also create the need for a lot of funding for office space. For us, this simply did not “feel” right, nor given our present conditions, are we the most competent people to do this. So, we decided to form a chapter of BSDS in the heart and to meet together and pick through Japanese translations and learn how to chant Maha Pranidhan. I think the majority of this group will understand our feelings, although this should not be taken in any way to be a separation, because it certainly isn’t. So we have devoted our body, speech and mind to the sake of all sentient beings, and recognize that Guruji is giving us guidance through the heart. We are also actively promoting Guruji’s cause among friends and relatives and online in Japan.
I have been struggling for some time also to pay my bills, and Sister Kidwen was extremely supportive, by paying most of Manu and Bhante’s expenses. I am so grateful for this. My difficulties were somewhat exacerbated by several coinciding problems, the first, you all know occurred with the earthquake, tidal waves, and nuclear situation in Japan, which made most businesses except grocery stores suffer if not stop completely. My own friends and customers were intimidated by the present situation. Many came to the shop to discuss their problems and have tea (and I was very grateful for their company) and yet few were inclined to buy anything. I also tended to retreat because I felt the need to concentrate on translating the Maha Pranidhan, so sometimes I simply hermitized 😉 for a few hours a day, assuming I would get into the swing of business again later. Things continued in this way when my husband went to hospital where he remains. I need to commute daily to take care of two apartments and make sure my children on both sides are fed. Of course I am happy now because I enjoy much better relations with my family, and even feel eventually I will be able to leave this apartment to my increasingly independent son and return to care for my younger daughter and husband. My husband was able to get leave over the past two days which were national holidays and all four of us were able to be together. Although now I am twice as busy…and thanks to the help of the shop people who have gently led me back into being a full-fledged aromatherapist for the sake of the shop and my family, things are looking better. So there are bright sides, and also realities that need to be faced. One, I am two months behind on my family bills ($3,000). The extra money that remained in Nepal is there for two purposes, some of that money ($1000) is being reserved to pay for Solar Energy once a decision is made by BSDS, and the remaining ($300) is to pay for extra expenses incurred by Dawa and or Marici who are spending so much time and energy to provide information and guidance to our group.
Given the situation, my husband’s continued hospitalization, and the needs of my family, I have decided not to attend Maha Darshan, but will probably revisit Nepal at a later time. Dawa has been praying very hard for us, my husband’s recovery and in the hope that one day my whole family wishes to go to Nepal with me. That would be wonderful. I certainly believe that this will soon be the case.
So I hope you will forgive me for reaching out to the group again for some support to help my family get back on its feet. I hope that we have been useful in providing the closest translations possible (thanks greatly to Rahul – I hope I will be able to send him something nice, even though he helps only with the sincere wish to understand Guruji.) The translations will continue beyond their publishing for Maha Pranidhan, and indeed beyond all publishing as I’m sure things will just keep popping up! There is nothing to teach others when such a culture of dishonesty, abusive exercise of positions that were meant to be volunteer contribution.
There is no valuable moral stand to show when no one in those management positions has the courage to stop the abuses, when these people are telling everyone what to do and how they explain away crimes like unlawful detention, the confiscation of personal belongings from the women they detained, and ask from people things that they themselves cannot do.
